How do you remain calm?
posted: December 1, 2022
This is something that will often come up when I am coaching clients. Those moments when you are facing a challenging situation or having to deal with a difficult person. In that moment how do you create a sense of calm and focus? Rather than reacting with emotion, which can often escalate an unwanted response or outcome. This is something I myself have worked on over the years and I believe the key is finding what works for you.
Here are some of the methods and tools I have learnt and sometimes practice:
1) BREATHE
So simple, yet so powerful. When you feel that emotion building, anger, anxiety, frustration or sadness. Just take a few seconds, stop and breathe. This will help you to focus, it will slow things down and you will be able to respond more effectively.
2) EMPATHIZE
Try and practice showing empathy. Empathize with the person or situation. Imagine yourself in their shoes. What response or approach might be welcomed to help keep things calm?
3) VISULAISE
What is the outcome you want? And how could you achieve that by remaining calm? Now visualise this happening and focus all your attention on that visualisation.
4) DISCONNECT
If you are able, step away from the situation and give yourself some time to think and revaluate what the best approach would be for the outcome that you want.
5) BE VULNERABLE
Sometimes it can be too much and our emptions can get the better of us. Rather than fighting it, just be honest and open about how you feel. In other words, let yourself be vulnerable. This will help build connection and create calm.
